I remember I had a gym and was living in New Orleans at the time and he came into town for the big Muhammad Ali/Leon Spinks fight that was on at the Superdome. All of a sudden there was a huge steroid investigation against Vince McMahon and this was played up heavily in the news. [ Q ] What other recollections do you have of Arnold? Do you think it is going in a good direction? [ Q ] What changes could be made to bodybuilding to make it a better sport in your view? He told me last time I saw him he had run into Bill Hilton. He worked his @ss off getting sponsors and fighting the Weiders every step of the way to make it work. There is actually nothing that supports that bodybuilders have a lower life expectancy, even if they have used. I have been a keen fan of Boyer Coe since the late 1960s. Boyer Coe August 11th, had quadruple heart bypass surgery. Steroids do help to grow muscle, but as the competition is using them as well, it becomes a matter of both using a relatively high amount of steroids, and training as hard as you can to maximize the growth. And ever since then the magazines have failed and David Pecker has become about 1.6 billion dollars in debt. In 1994 I was right on the money. Honestly to me, and everybody has a view of what they think the ideal physique should be, Sergio Oliva's physique in 1972 was the best I have ever seen of anybody even to date. As Boyer says; I always simply trained hard and put forth the effort.. It never really happened like that. Again, I would have to say genetics; that along with always training hard on a regular basis, a good diet, and a positive outlook. Check out how Josh Br. Boyer Coe started training at just five years old. If I could pick anybody's physique that I would like to look like it would be Sergio Oliva's physique at the 1972 Olympia. Bodybuilders of Coe's caliber had the utmost respect for the stage, their fellow competitors, and the titles being battled over. Boyer was awesome. So he is still around. Boyer Coe talks about why the 2nd Colorado Experiment failed, why the Nautilus System didn't work for Bodybuilders and how Arthur Jones tried to blame him for it. The guys of my era could not even stand on stage with the guys of today. He called this training plan WCT, aka, work capacity training. What do you do to stall the aging process? The important thing is not to ruin the sport. Coe believed that he had less genetic potential than Casey Viator or Sergio Oliva, two other top bodybuilders whom Jones trained Coe joked that Viator had only to look at weights to grow! Well there was no confrontation onstage. Coes titles included Mr. Universe (1971), and Mr. America (1975). Retired in 2004, eventually received a kidney . What we can learn from his story is, that everyone starts somewhere even the greats like Boyer. I just wanted to go about my business. Coe started his workouts with the core. Ed Corney 9. I think if Arnold had been competitive enough he would have entered but I don't think Joe Weider could even afford to take that chance. After dominating the 70s and 80s, Coe competed in the 1994 and 1995 Master Olympia shows. You are talking about a guy who could do ten sets of ten reps of chins with 200 pounds attached at a bodyweight of 200 pounds. Once people's minds are made up, even if what they believe is wrong and false, if that is what they believe, that is what they will believe to be the truth. Just about the time that Vince McMahon was really starting to go strong it all happened. [ Q ] He did say a short while back that he was training for a movie at the time and decided to take advantage of the shape he had achieved. Freddy Ortiz was another man with a phenomenal physique. Alongside this, he would also eat a lot of chicken, fish, beef, and pork for additional protein. Riding high from his first show, Boyer continuedto compete in local contests throughout the summer, before turning to bigger competitions. Really just as controversial was the 1972 Mr. Olympia Contest held in Essen, Germany. Because I want to ask him something about the Mister Olympia 1982 preparation. Worst were the chemicals. I remember back in 1967, a guy who helped me tremendously and who has been my inspiration in life, Red Lerille, the 1960 Mr. America, tried to teach me how to hit a side chest pose. Coes bodybuilding career evolved from doing push-ups in his room to taking the stage at the Mr. Olympia show. Coe panicked and ran out the side door, which was locked behind him. The only person that took his trophy and smashed it to pieces offstage was Frank Zane. All new programs for womens training, combat sports, and performance. Boyer Coe was born and raised in Lake Charles, together with his younger sister Cindy. [ Q ] Judging from the DVD coverage of the show and various reports, there seemed to be a lot of upset competitors after the 1980 Olympia. You did that for ten days straight and after those ten days you were just beat into the ground. I have no idea and even if you ask him today he probably couldn't even tell you why in the h*ll he ever did that. So we virtually did everything. We did not feel like training after that because we had to be on the set at seven o'clock every morning and we never left until at least seven o'clock at night. His huge biceps & great pecs always astounded me. And I want to remind you that even though Mike was in incredible condition and ended up placing fourth, he never, ever claimed that he should have won the Mr. Olympia contest. [ Q ] Interestingly you are known among other things for your split biceps. [ Q ] The 1980 Mr. Olympia must be the most talked about in the history of professional bodybuilding. Have you always had this, or did you train for it? Coe focused his workouts on a variation of pyramid sets. He would focus on strict form, moving slowly on the negative part of the movement, rest for 60 seconds, and then progress on to the next set, which was lighter by 5-10 pounds. And I think everybody else who was a contestant in that contest, with the possible exception of Tom Platz, who idolized Arnold and wanted to be like him, didn't think Arnold deserved to win. As a teenager, Boyer Coe knew he had what it would take to become a champion bodybuilder. Here is the approach Boyer is currently using: Day 1: Hamstrings, Quads, Abs Day 2: Rest Day 3: Back, Rear Delts, Abs Day 4: Rest Day 5: Chest, Biceps, Forearms, Abs Day 6: Rest Day 7: Front and Side Delts, Traps, Triceps, Abs. You can develop muscle but you cannot change genetic structure and fortunately for them Sergio Oliva and Brian were just gifted genetically. That is correct, he even competed in bodybuilding. And everybody who has trained a while knows a million different funny stories you could tell as one normally would do in a gym, and we would work this into the conversation as well. Judges will always have their bias. He was a great coach and I really learned a lot about true showmanship from him. The crowd loved it and thought it was part of the show. They have HGH and insulin available to them and I am sure that accounts for a lot of the extra muscle mass. Everyone else refused to have anything to do with the video. An ambassador for the sport, Coe spoke frequently to groups about its lifelong benefits. Its because of these impressive feats, Boyer established himself as one of the most accomplished bodybuilders of the 70s and 80s. Funny story about this contest: since there was only $25,000 involved as prize money and no one was really doing it for the money, I suggested that, whomever the winner might be, why not give all the prize money to the him. At first, Boyer practiced calisthenics, thinking this would give him the size he always wanted. The $5,000 Cooke was carrying the night of. So what happened was the next day at the meeting everybody was complaining and I said, "Look, there is only one guy who wants the weight classes. Just how significant is he within the annals of bodybuilding history? I have heard so many different stories, but I think the culprit in the whole thing was this guy, David Pecker, who purchased Weider publications and then also wanted to purchase the IFBB. Coe felt that to compete at the highest levels he had to train smart and outwork his competition he says that he could push himself to the limit he seldom missed a workout. Was: $19.99. The other person is Wayne DeMillia. From owning a health food store and running a gym (in New Orleans) to prototyping exercise equipment and co-hosting a fitness program on ESPN, Boyer has, in one way or another, maintained links with the fitness community. Is there a way to come in contact with Boyer Coe? Too much muscle is as harmful as too much fat, Do you know how much money sports generate? Even today with the enormous weights these guys' lift, nobody could approach the strength level Marvin Eder had. I think that list is shit and we need further research with real proven studies. [ Q ] You mentioned Lou Ferrigno in the context of the WBBG. That was the most upset I have ever seen people in a contest. I already said what I wanted to about enlarged hearts and HGH. Also big thanks would go to Ken Guilbeaux who believed in me from the very beginning and gave me good advice. I think Arnold today would probably look back and regret having said that and would have realized all these many years later, that it (the situation) certainly was not that important. What we need, are more bodybuilders who, like Coe, are obsessed with training, competing, and making money and growing the sport - the right way. Boyer Coe is still alive today and training five times a week. Everybody talks about the big confrontation between Arnold and Mike Mentzer. Give me the physique of a 1972 Sergio Oliva. Boyer also secured top four places in the Mr. Olympia contest in 1977, 1978, and 1980. Having had no previous experience being on stage, Boyer was pleasantly surprised to hear his name called out among the top 5 contestants. I said, "Well, I don't know how to do it." Not only did he have tremendous mass but also he had little bitty hips and little bitty knees and little bitty ankles, which actually accentuated all the full muscle bellies. Yes people still talk about it and the sad thing is none of those people were there and 90 percent of them weren't even born when the contest took place. The producer would show up the first day and the last day. Link. Should Sergio have beaten Arnold at he 1972 Olympia? He eventually outgrew the old dumbbells and joined a nearby gym. [ Q ] Given bodybuilding has had so many players throughout its history, who do you feel has really pushed bodybuilding forward for it to have achieved the popularity it has today? Not many bodybuilders ever competed in as many shows as Boyer Coe. Arthur Jones trains Boyer Coe through a full body high intensity workout in the Nautilus studio.All performed on vintage Nautilus machines. How did they differ from the ones you used in the 70's and early 80's? Coe didnt believe in the advanced principles used for adding additional stress to a workout. [ Q ] When did you first begin bodybuilding and why did you choose it initially as a sport and eventually a career? Coes mantra was, Reg Park: Idol and Mentor to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mike Mentzers High-Intensity Training (HIT), Joe Weider: The Mastermind Behind the Modern Bodybuilding Movement, Jim Haislop: The Successor to Steve Reeves. The judge's opinion never really mattered to me. It was also the first time that Arnold beat Sergio. Paul Graham, who organized the 1980 Olympia, was a close friend of Arnold's. You see that was his first big break, the Conan movies, and chances are had I not voiced an opinion at the 1980 Mr. Olympia I would have had a small part in the first of these movies. I would have gone back to driving a truck. He started training where he was born and won Mr. Texas and then Mr. Dallas in 1965, Mr. America in 1969 then NABBA Mr. Universe in 1972, World Cup in 1981 as well as many other top bodybuilding titles. If Arnold had of been honest to me and said he needed to win the contest because it would have helped him in his movie I would have stayed home; I wouldn't have gone ten thousand miles and stayed two weeks down there in Australia. People have asked me many times, would the outcome of the 1981 Olympia been the same if Mike Mentzer, Frank Zane, Albert Beckles and myself had entered?
